Everyone out there suggests we be kind and compassionate. Most of us try to follow the advice but fail miserably. It seems we can’t do it and that kindness and compassion are not within our reach.
But think again! Are kindness and compassion such difficult tasks for us? I think YES! For most of us, it is difficult as we are out of practice and have lost touch with how to be kind to ourselves. Don’t you agree?
Let us consider a perspective of a random person trained to be busy, studious, workaholic. This person might be an athlete, a performer, or a professional. The training this person has received is transactional, outcome-based, and results-oriented.
There is no room for kindness or compassion in this busy schedule. I know you agree too. We hardly get time to practice kindness or compassion. Hence, I say that it is tough for most of us.
Our education system teaches and encourages us to practice kindness and compassion. But, after primary years of education, we move into more detailed studies diving deep into the concepts and procedures of worldly knowledge. In the process, we leave behind kindness and compassion. They take the back seat, and we join the rat race where there is no room for the poor pair.
Today, I am not here to teach you these – you already know what kindness and compassion are. But, for some reason, you are hesitating to practice them. Maybe you are not confident that you are good at it, or you may embarrass yourself by displaying kindness. That’s fine – these emotions are humane.
What matters is bringing kindness and compassionate behavior back into practice and displaying it wholeheartedly but genuinely. Do not overdo it. Keep it simple and gentle. I am sure this will be easier said than done, but with a little bit of effort, kindness and compassion can flourish in our lives.
When you practice kindness and compassionate action, it will not only make your life easier but also others around you.
Kindness and compassion are contagious. When we show them to others, they will feel the warmth of these emotions in return.
It is said that a kind word spoken can start a chain reaction that makes someone’s day better just by hearing about it.
If we have trouble being kind to ourselves even on occasions when there is no one else around, then imagine how difficult it must be for someone who constantly lives with people!
The following tips might help:
1) Start with yourself
The first step is to start with yourself. As much as possible, be kind to yourself – even if you don’t feel like it at the moment. When we are kinder to ourselves, it makes us more likely to treat others kindly too.
2) Make time for kindness
Make time for kindness every day. It could be a few minutes devoted solely to being gentle and compassionate with yourself or taking some extra time out of your busy schedule. Avoid rushing through anything crucial out of fear of offending someone else’s feelings.
3) Pay it forward
Whenever you can, show kindness and compassion to others. It might be as simple as helping them with something they are struggling with or telling them how much you appreciate them. Letting someone else know that we see their qualities in a kind light can impact their day. It will make the world feel just that little bit brighter for them!
4) Recognize the power of kindness
Kindness is not only powerful on its own, but it also has a tremendous effect when we share it with others. When we show kindness and compassion to others, they will feel the warmth of these emotions in return. It can be a truly life-changing experience for everyone involved!
5) Stay positive
When things are tough, we feel out of our depth. It can be helpful to take a moment and focus on what is good in our lives. It might include recalling instances when kindness was shown to us, taking time for ourselves each day, or focusing on the people around us who make life worthwhile. When we stay positive and remain connected to the good in life, negativity loses its power over us.
If we treat others kindly, it not only makes us feel good on a personal level, but it also has a positive impact on the people around us. When we show kindness and compassion to others, they are more likely to return the favor. Keeping these values in mind can make life just that much better!
Remember to include empathy in your conversation and self-compassion when you think. Generosity, gratitude, and other random acts of kindness add sparkle to your way of life.
